Hygienic self-catheterization with Curan

Catheterization in the hospital always takes place under sterile conditions. At home, or away from home, not everything needs to be sterile, but it is important to be hygienic. This prevents irritation and infection.

Follow these hygiene rules:

  • wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry them with a clean towel
  • if there is no soap available, use lotion wipes or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • for women: clean the urethral opening with water. If there is no water available, use moist toilet tissue wipes. Wipe from front to back
  • for men: clean the top of the penis with water. If there is no water available, use moist toilet tissue wipes
  • do not touch the catheter with your hands
  • let the urine drain into the toilet or another receptacle
  • when removing the catheter, place a finger over the end or over the connector to prevent leakage
  • dispose of the used catheter in a waste bin or wrap it in a plastic bag wash your hands with soap again
