Am I capable of catheterising myself?

For many people, self-catheterisation is easy to learn. Whether you can do this independently depends on several personal and practical factors. A doctor or nurse will assess this with you and provide explanations and guidance where necessary.
In general, it is important that you:

  • have sufficient hand function and coordination to use the catheter safely
  • have sufficient vision, or have ways to compensate for this
  • can comprehend and follow instructions
  • are motivated and able to work hygienically
  • have suitable catheters that are appropriate for your situation

If independent catheterisation is (temporarily) not possible, support from a carer or healthcare professional can offer a solution. Together, we will look for a solution that suits your life and capabilities.
